#156 How to Stay Open When You Feel Judged or ‘Fixed’

how to stay open when you feel judged
Why does “help” sometimes feel like criticism? In this post, we explore the nervous system response to being fixed, how old patterns of shutdown get activated, and how to stay connected to yourself in moments of misattunement.

There’s a moment many of us know well.

You share something vulnerable, and instead of being met in the moment, you’re given advice. Or suggestions. Corrections. Solutions.

And something in you tightens.

It’s subtle, but unmistakable.

You feel less open. Less willing. Less there.

How to Stay Open When You Feel Judged or ‘Fixed”

What’s happening in these moments isn’t just about communication style.

It’s about attunement.

When someone moves too quickly into fixing, our systems may register:

  • You’re not with me.
  • You’re not seeing me.
  • Something about me needs to change.

Even if none of that is consciously intended, because the nervous system doesn’t track intention.

It tracks impact.

The Protective Intelligence of Shutdown

When your body closes in those moments, it’s not random.

It’s protective.

For many people, shutdown is linked to earlier experiences where speaking up made things worse, or being vulnerable wasn’t met with care. Perhaps pushing back led to escalation or harm.

Our system learns that it’s safer to go quiet. Safer to pull back.

This isn’t weakness.

It’s intelligence shaped by experience.

The Shift: Staying With Yourself

How to stay open when we feel judged or ‘fixed’ isn’t about forcing ourselves to stay open.

It’s to stay connected to ourselves when we begin to close.

That might sound like:

  • I notice I’m tightening right now.
  • Something in me is bracing.
  • I think I need something different.

From there, we have more choice.

You might ask: Can you just be with me for a moment before we go into solutions?

Or you might simply take in the care, and choose not to go deeper with that person.

Seeing People Clearly

One of the more challenging truths in relational work is this:

Not everyone can meet you in the way you need.

And part of staying open is learning to see that clearly.

Without making them wrong. and without abandoning yourself.

Turning Insight Into Action

How to stay open when you feel judged or ‘fixed’ might happen by:

  1. Track your body in real time.

Notice when you tighten, pull back, or go quiet. That’s your entry point.

2. Name the need (internally or out loud)

Try: I think I’m needing presence more than solutions right now.

3. Differentiate people in your life

Who offers empathy easily? Who defaults to fixing? Work with people accordingly.
