As I write this, I am sitting in at a resort in Nova Scotia listening to the ocean waves gently lapping at the rocks outside. The first day of intensive training in Integral Facilitation has been unexpectedly powerful for me: you know it’s a good training when you are moved to tears on the first day.

These works of balance-art are created from rock 415 million years old, and while I initially thought about the marvels of balance, I found myself thinking about how they epitomize three words from today’s training and discussion: effortless, selfless and timeless.

When I am doing work aligned to my personal deep sense of meaning and purpose: it feels effortless, I lose my sense of self and I easily lose track of time.

What makes a life worth living?

When was the last time you were engaged in work or play that felt … effortless, … timeless and … selfless?

Mihaly Csikszentmihaly talks about how people find pleasure and lasting satisfaction in activities that bring about a state of “flow” (which these three words point to). For a deeper dive into some of these ideas may I suggest his quick Ted Talk or his book, Flow.
