boundary setting teens 2

It’s time to start doing things differently.

You can be present and loving while having boundaries and setting limits at the same time.

But you can’t do it following the old parenting models.
We need a new relational model for parenting, and so does the world.

Strengthen Connections

Safe and trusting relationships are the bedrock of peaceful parenting. Connect through conflict and high emotions and maintain a learning and growth focus in all situations.

Set Effective Boundaries

Know what boundaries to establish, be clear about them and have effective follow-through. Learn how to balance empathy and limits so that you foster your child’s development without harming their dignity.

Build Trust

Support your children’s unique selves and journeys by cultivating close, trusting relationships based on cooperation, interdependence, and mutual care.

End Power Struggles

Learn how to step out of any power-struggle without losing authority or influence. Know how to choose your battles and win your children over again.

You may be wondering what qualifies me to help you have more connected and collaborative relationships with your kids.

As a teacher, writer, consultant and clinical psychologist, I have offered therapy, education, nonviolent communication and human development training for over 25 years.

As a mother who has parented one biological daughter and four step-children over two marriages, I know all about complex family dynamics!

And as a child born during Apartheid to white South African parents, I’ve had a lot of unlearning and undoing of my own to do: yelling at my kids when I didn’t really want to, struggling to get them to do what was needed, losing my cool, and then sinking into guilt and shame.

I knew in my heart that there was a better way, and sought out many wisdom teachers, including Daniel Siegel, Alfie Kohn, Marshall Rosenberg, Sura Hart and Dr. Shefali Tsabary, to name just a few.

Letting go of how I was parented, I forged a new path for my own family. I shifted away from punishments and rewards and replaced them with collaboration and natural giving. I focused on the emotional nourishment needed to cultivate peace in our home, and today I’m here to help you do the same.

What people are saying …

Yvette’s mastery of empathetic listening, skillful interventions, and compassion-based framework has transformed my relationship with my children. I field their emotions so much more effectively and no longer get so stuck in my own triggers, fear, and anger.

– K.S., M.Ed, Teacher and Parent

So many other parenting books or courses turned me off with their preaching or quick fixes. I was thinking that parenting is too complex to “teach” or “learn” when I come across your fabulous, self-reflective course that honors the complexity of parenting. I love how you focus on relationships, growth and what we are bringing to the situations instead of focusing on “fixing” our children.

– Suzanne D., Workshop Participant

Yvette generously brings her full self to her work and truly practices what she preaches, modeling the healing relational work she promotes. For me, this modeling has been a profound gift. Her style is authentic, connecting and masterful.

– T.L., workshop participant

Yvette is warm, engaging, and entertaining. A gifted presenter who delivers deeply meaningful content in a warm and loving way. She makes what is dark in ourselves humorous and workable.

– L.S., course participant

I was not even fully aware of how pervasive my tendency toward blaming and judging were before I began working with Yvette. She created a paradigm shift for me in my life as I discovered that I can bring acceptance and curiosity into challenging situations.

– R.S., workshop participant

I love thinking about the ditches on both sides of the road and the constant recalibration based on where we are at now. Like so many other parents I wish I had found your work earlier but know we always have now, acknowledging and mining the lessons from the past and moving with more wisdom, emotional grounding and openness into the future.

The Modules

Module 1

The Paradigm Shift:
Connection

We start by focusing on how to create safe containers and empathic spaces to support deep listening with one another.

Module 1 we explore:

  • The benefits of being vulnerable with ourselves and others
  • Giving and receiving empathy and support for the very challenging task of wholehearted parenting
  • How to put our ego aside so that we can play from our souls and open our hearts to ourselves and others so that we can truly connect

We will also spend some time intentionally letting go of the way we were parented as we embark on the new practice of wholehearted parenting for a new generation.

Module 2

Inner Work &
Self-Compassion

We cannot achieve deep connection or transformative parenting until we take full ownership of our internal worlds: our beliefs, our triggers, our self-sabotaging strategies and fears.

We focus on looking at our own parenting patterns and cultivating self-compassion in the face of judgments that may arise.

In Module 2 we explore:

  • Getting clarity on what behaviors trigger reactivity in you
  • Develop practices for slowing down
  • How to resource ourselves to give to our children what we ourselves didn’t get from our parents
  • How to meet our own needs first – without guilt
  • Getting clear on our own yes and no – without self-doubt

Module 3

Emotional Nourishment

Children need to experience their parents as emotionally supportive and nurturing: This is the cornerstone of developing their own emotional intelligence.

In Module 3, we’ll explore how to reframe “acting out” as a reflection on unmet emotional needs and strategies for responding to these emotional needs without reinforcing the “acting out” behaviors themselves.

We’ll take a look at:

  • How to handle their mood swings
  • How to connect on an emotional level, without condoning self-sabotaging behaviors
  • How to repair rifts and restore trust after difficult events

Module 4

Untangling Conflict

Understanding the difference between the protective and punitive use of force is an essential parenting paradigm shift.

Get clarity on effective limit-setting that fosters trust and closeness when done strategically, firmly, and open-heartedly.

We’ll explore:

  • Why teaching is more effective than punishment
  • The roots of “misbehavior”
  • Understanding how we project our fears onto our children and undoing that damage
  • Creating meaningful narratives

Module 5

Boundaries, Limits, & Rules

Boundaries are essential for everyone’s health and well-being and good, clear boundaries create deeper connections and safety for all.

We’ll cover:

  • How to balance boundaries and empathy
  • Defusing power struggles
  • Celebrating mistakes
  • The rules about rules: Relational rules
  • Navigating your “yes” and “no” with an open heart
  • Why heavy-handed tactics backfire

Module 6

Living into your calling

As we wrap up the masterclass, we spend some time getting more deeply connected with your own inner calling as a parent.

When we live in alignment with our deep purpose, we feel inspired and alive.

You’ll set a new internal GPS for future endeavors, install the key points that have been most meaningful, and leave with a practical list of new scripts, strategies, and support resources. Plus, this module features a bonus Q&A section.

Are there any prerequisites for joining?

This class is designed for people who are already familiar with the principles of compassionate communication and interested in applying the principles of nonviolence into their parenting.

In that regard, some degree of familiarity with nonviolent communication, connected parenting techniques would be super helpful. That said, those are not requirements, and if you’d like to join anyway and want me to send you some materials to get you up to speed, I can easily do that. Just send me an email.

I have adult children and grandchildren. Is this course appropriate for me?

YES. The principles will be very relevant in all your interactions with both your adult children and your grandchildren. Those can be tricky relationships to navigate!

Anyone who works with children, teenagers, young adults, or adult children is welcome. Biological parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, caregivers, grandparents, teachers and health care providers. If you care about a child, no matter your age or theirs, you are welcome to join us.

How do I watch the video modules?

Once you register, you’ll get access to our Student Portal and to the program dashboard. You’ll log into there to watch the videos, and you’ll check off your progress as you go along, opening up the next module.

You will need reliable access to the internet, and you can watch using your smartphone, tablet, desktop, or laptop.

Leave top tab empty! No content in other words
Is this for parents of children at a specific age-level?

The general principles we cover will apply to all ages from infants to adult children. However, the particular strategies and implementation of these principles will look different from one developmental stage to the next, and we will talk about those differences during our sessions.

What's the time investment?

Each module ranges from about 45 minutes long to 70 minutes long, plus opportunities to pause and reflect/journal.

You’ll also receive recommended reading, preparation materials, and reflection prompts, and you can spend as much or as little time on that as you wish in between watching the video modules.

What if I want more personalized support?

However, if you need personalized support, you are welcome to book a private consultation with me, and we can work through whatever situation you are facing. (Note that private consultations are not included with the workshop registration fee.)

A Note from Yvette

As you decide whether or not this is a good fit for you, let me ask you some questions:

  • Are you truly happy with your parenting right now?
  • Would you like more inner peace and self-forgiveness for things you’ve done in the past?
  • What do you think is keeping you from being able to live up to your full potential as a parent?

This is your one precious chance to really be there for your child, no matter their age.

Yes, you can continue to apply old shame and blame parenting methods that haven’t been serving you thus far.

You can let the meltdowns and acting out continue at the cost of your own and your child’s mental health.

You can try finding the right diagnosis, the right reward schedule, and the right medication out there…

Or you can get to the heart of what you’re each needing.

Join us for a beautiful, effective way of parenting that strengthens your child from the inside out and creates a lasting, secure bond. Raise a confident, resilient child whose company you actually enjoy.

And most importantly, like yourself as a parent again.
